Reflecting on Week 1

 This has been a really interesting week. I spent a good portion of this week thinking about my own experiences with all things Web 2.0, both from a personal and professional perspective. I think the thing I realized most this week - after performing a sort of "inventory" of my Web 2.0 behaviors - is that I interact with the web much more than I perhaps would have suspected. I think if someone asked me last week I likely would have mentioned that I wasn't especially plugged into this world. After all, I sort of take pride in being "anti social media" in many ways.

However, I'm on Reddit. I subscribe to a sports message board, and post regularly. I watch videos on YouTube, and comment where I can to add my own knowledge. I'm not on Facebook, and while I have a Twitter account I rarely tweet. However, I am connected to this world and make contributions on a regular basis. I think this week was good perspective, and I'm excited to open myself up to learning more and growing professionally as I explore this world.

    Using Twitter for Sports has gotten a lot better recently. All the highlights and teams are integrated really nicely into the platform, and it's a lot of fun interacting with a lot of very colorful people. I'm not huge into sports but Twitter is getting me there. Consider becoming active on sports Twitter.

Reflecting on Week 3

This has been an interesting week of self exploration. As I posted in a previous blog, I kind of came to terms with my lurking behavior in online forums. As my classmate pointed out in the discussion, I don't necessarily think it's an altogether bad trait. Even lurkers contribute to the overall experience. Knowledge and thoughts are shared, and sometimes not immediately reacted to by those simply absorbing. However, one can't really exist without the other. In some ways, I kind of attributed it to a concert in which an artist plays for a crowd.  Having said that, I did make a resolution (of sorts) to perhaps "put myself out there" a bit more, as I truly feel as though sometimes I fail to do an adequate job of sharing my knowledge with my communities. Digital Citizenship in Adult Learning - What's Our Role?

As instructional designers involved with adult learning the concept of "digital citizenship" - the promotion of ethical behavior while using technology - is an interesting concept. Over the past few years this concept has more or less evolved from direct observations of our experiences in our connected worlds. As children began branching out into these shared online spaces parents became concerned about how to both keep their children safe in these environments, and ensure they're also acting appropriately (the same expectations as someone in a physical environment). No bullying. Not sharing personal information with strangers. Making sure that they're reporting any instances of misuse or anything inappropriate. It's who I am.  But wait, let me back up a bit, as I realize this class is all about exploring the world of online communities. Let me explain what a "lurker" is... A lurker is a person - like me - who visits online message boards (think Reddit, or some Facebook post) and reads the comments, but doesn't really participate. We lurkers sit in the shadows of the internet, and like the picture above, we read and judge. Do we have relevant things to say and contribute? Of course we do! Do we always share them?
