Linking Up

 


Ok, ok...I know. I haven't exactly been keeping up with my professional networking responsibilities. I get it. But the thing is, I've been busy. With a ten year old running around the house, work...the creeping vine that's adamant on taking over my yard one square foot at a time. There's been a lot on my plate, okay!?

So with great excitement, I'm here to announce that this week I have successfully joined a couple of LinkedIn professional organizations/groups of relevance to my career. Was one of them for the school assignment? Yes. But let's not get hung up in the details. I'm a member now, and on my way to creating more of an online presence. 

So far the majority of the posts have been more or less ads for the companies they work for. No, I'm not really in the need of AI chat bots at the moment, or a new LMS. Would I like one? Sure. Can I purchase one? No. So, hang tight. I might need you soon...

But ads or not, I'm committed to sorting through the muck to find the gems. Also, I have made more of a commitment to actually contribute as well. This self-admitted lurker is on his way to making some strides in the social arena. In truth, I'm starting to realize I have a lot more to contribute to my community of practice, and I think it's about time I start. Big things ahead!

    The meme is great and brings back fond memories. I too am guilty of not being as active as I probably should be on social media sites such as LinkedIn, twitter and Instagram; however, I also have children and vegetation at the house that keep me quite busy. I do think these platforms provide an excellent channel for open Commnication, but I also think one must be cognizant of some of the risks they pose as well. Especially, for someone who is somewhat private, setting your account to public means letting the entire world in. I still have mixed feelings about this.

Reflecting on Week 3

This has been an interesting week of self exploration. As I posted in a previous blog, I kind of came to terms with my lurking behavior in online forums. As my classmate pointed out in the discussion, I don't necessarily think it's an altogether bad trait. Even lurkers contribute to the overall experience. Knowledge and thoughts are shared, and sometimes not immediately reacted to by those simply absorbing. However, one can't really exist without the other. Digital Citizenship in Adult Learning - What's Our Role?

As instructional designers involved with adult learning the concept of "digital citizenship" - the promotion of ethical behavior while using technology - is an interesting concept. Over the past few years this concept has more or less evolved from direct observations of our experiences in our connected worlds. As children began branching out into these shared online spaces parents became concerned about how to both keep their children safe in these environments, and ensure they're also acting appropriately (the same expectations as someone in a physical environment). No bullying. Not sharing personal information with strangers. Making sure that they're reporting any instances of misuse or anything inappropriate. It's who I am.  But wait, let me back up a bit, as I realize this class is all about exploring the world of online communities. Let me explain what a "lurker" is... A lurker is a person - like me - who visits online message boards (think Reddit, or some Facebook post) and reads the comments, but doesn't really participate. We lurkers sit in the shadows of the internet, and like the picture above, we read and judge. Do we have relevant things to say and contribute? Of course we do! Do we always share them? Of course we don't. We don't really know why we lurk like we do. Are we afraid to participate? Scared we might meet some online bully who types mean things toward us? Maybe.
